Year One - Dye & Breakdown for Character

Squire Hare

Following on from the body padding module, our next task was creating the costume to bring our character to life. I created the costume fully in dyed calico, using knowledge gained from our practical workshops to create the right dye combinations to match the period colours of the illustration as closely as possible. I researched period garments using historical clothing books, performances and fashion photography from the period.  This research was then used to create the scaled-up patterns for Squire Hare’s waistcoat, breeches and tailcoat.

This was my first foray into tailoring - I focused on structure, fit, and movement to ensure the costume was both historically accurate and functional, capturing the character’s essence while staying true to the design.
