Year One - Innovation in Costume

Squire Hare Body Padding

For this module, I was given the character ‘Squire Hare’ from a 1935 Churchman’s cigarette card illustration to create an innovative costume transforming the human form into a believable animal form. My costume focused on the hare both as a creature and performer - lean, agile and powerful. I approached this project with a sculptural mindset, building the body padding onto a Lycra base suit. The result was a hybrid costume base ready to be transformed further with character costume, dye, breakdown, and collaborative headpieces made by props students later in the process. This project was a great opportunity to experiment with shape, form, and creative expression.
