Year One - Costume Realisation

The Young Victoria

This was our first construction module, all about recreating a look from the film The Young Victoria (2009). We were to create a costume for a simulated stage production of the story, using Sandy Powell’s original designs as a starting point. I researched early 19th-century fashion and original portraits of Queen Victoria to get the silhouette and details right. I drafted the pattern from scratch using model measurements, then adapted it for historical accuracy. The final look included a bum roll, petticoat, skirt, and boned bodice. It was a great opportunity to bring together construction skills, period research, and a bit of drama in the details.
